Meeting the global energy demand while addressing climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st Century. Providing energy access around the globe while balancing climate concerns requires a cleaner energy mix and innovative solutions for the new era. Oil and gas will continue playing a vital role in the global energy supply, and solutions are needed for cleaner, safer, and more efficient production, transport, and use of our important energy resources. The transition to a low-carbon future will be greatly influenced by the extent to which the oil and gas industry reduces its methane emissions.
A concerted industry response is needed to increase focus on the reduction of methane emissions. In 2017, a set of non-binding Methane Guiding Principles were developed collaboratively by a coalition of industry, international
institutions, non-governmental organizations, and academics. The principles focus on priority areas for action along the natural gas value chain, from production to the final consumer. The principles are complementary to and mutually reinforcing of other initiatives, including the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s (CCAC), and the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP). The members of OGCI and CCAC OGMP, who co-developed the Methane Guiding Principles, ensured complementary to the aims of these coalitions. The Methane Guiding Principles seek to drive impact beyond these initiatives into the entire natural gas value chain. The Guiding Principles encourage participation of companies who are not members of these other coalitions.
Current global annual greenhouse gas emissions are ~36.2-49.2 GT CO2 eq. and have been trending up over past several years. According to a recent UN warning, CO emissions must be cut in half by 2030 (from 2010 levels) and reach zero net emissions by 2050 to limit post-industrial age global warming to 1.5°C. The global oil and gas industry directly emits ~4,419 MMT CO2 eq. (~13% of global total) across supply chain. Around 60% of emissions come from upstream, with processing (e.g. associated gas venting and flaring) while downstream accounts for ~1/3 of emissions.
